Becoming a Volunteer Firefighter or EMT

Our Fire Department relies heavily upon the people in it's community. It's those people who volunteer their time to become firefighters, EMT's and sometimes both, and help their community in times of need. They go above and beyond for the community and for eachother.

We train these people to the IFSAC Firefighter 1 level, and our medical staff, to the Washington State EMT-B or First Responder Level.

The Fire Academy is held once per year starting in March, but pre-requisite training starts in January at our department.

EMT school is also held once per year starting in January. Pre-requisite training starts the end of December.

Applications for both must be in by Mid December.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, below is a description of the process and what to expect:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must Be 18 years old unless joining our High School Program through Coupeville High School

  • Must live or work within Fire District boundaries

  • No Felony Convictions in last 7 years. Misdemeanors will also be reviewed, but will not necessarily disqualify you.

  • No record of Drivers License suspension or revocation in any State within the last 3 years.

If you meet the above requirements

  1. Pick an application up at Headquarters.

  2. Fill it out and return it.

  3. You will be contacted by the Training Officer, who will set up a time for your oral interview and physical agility test. The Physical Agility test description is provided in the application packet, and is different for firefighters and EMT's.

  4. Physical examination at departments expense.

  5. If the above goes smoothly, in January, you will start pre-requisite training for the fire academy.

  • Call pay is currently $8.00 per call.

  • Fire Training drills are held every Monday night, you must make at least 7 drills per quarter to maintain good standing with the department. Drill pay is $14.00.

  • EMS Drills are held every 1st and 3rd Thursdays. You must make 4 drills per quarter.

  • The department also has available to volunteers," duty shifts". These are paid day shifts where the volunteers can come in and work with the career staff.
