Chiefs Corner By Fire Chief Joe Biller Welcome to our web site. Whether you’re browsing just for pleasure or for business activity, our goal is to provide interesting and helpful information about our Fire Department. Our Heritage Our friendly community is distinguished by its spectacular vistas, a historic downtown and terrific neighbors. In 1852, Boston sea captain Thomas Coupe, filed for land on Penn Cove at the present site of the town that bears his name. Thus making Coupeville the second-oldest town in Washington, after Walla-Walla. http://www.nps.gov/ebla/ Since then, in one form or another, citizens in the community out of necessity, banded together to fend off fire. Starting about the mid to late 20’s, as far as I know, the Town of Coupeville formally organized a band of valiant volunteers into the “Coupeville Fire Department”. And in 1951, the rural area surrounding Coupeville formed a Fire District staffed entirely by volunteers, also. The District boundaries encompass the Central portion of Whidbey Island. In 1996, the two departments merged and today our name is synonymous with the area we protect – Central Whidbey Island Fire and Rescue. The lives and property of citizens and visitors to the Coupeville and the Greenbank area continue to be protected by a group of caring compassionate professionals. The Department has transitioned from an all-volunteer department which primarily responded to fires, into a combination career/volunteer department providing a broad range of modern fire services. These services include an outstanding emergency medical delivery system, fire suppression and rescue, and comprehensive fire prevention programs. Check out what we have to offer. Webmaster and Firefighter Derek LaFontaine does a great job creating this page. Email him with any suggestions you may have at: dlafontain@cwfire.org …… Thanks again for looking at our progress and please let us know how we could improve. Thanks Joe Biller, Fire Chief |
